Correctional Managed Care
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston provides Correctional Managed Care to more than 100,000 patients at over 76 prison facilities across Central and East Texas.
In September 1994, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston formed a partnership with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to provide managed health care of inmates located in the eastern half of the state. Today, UTMB provides medical, dental and psychiatric services to 80 percent of the state inmate population. We lead the world in telemedicine applications, successfully oversee a multimillion dollar budget, carefully implement managed care business principles, closely monitor quality, and incorporate all the benefits of a university-based clinical association.
UTMB has the largest correctional managed health care system in the United States. The majority of the health services departments are outpatient, medical/surgical centers that provide primary care for all inmates at each unit. Although the health services department is inside the unit, interaction between health professionals and inmates is limited to health related encounters, and the nature of this limited relationship fosters inmate respect and appreciation for the health care staff. The correctional staff ensures your security at all times.
