Primary and secondary education is also provided through public and private schools. A variety of affordable housing is available, including townhouses and condominiums, charming turn-of –the-century homes, and modern subdivisions. Additionally, the island’s west end features a number of houses located on the beach and on a network of canals that lead to Galveston Bay. The city also boasts cultural attractions usually found only in larger communities. Called the Wall Street of the Southwest” in the late 1800’s, the city’s Strand District has been restored to full Victorian grandeur with restaurants, art galleries, shops, hotels, loft apartments, museums and small businesses. Residents and visitors enjoy performing arts presentations at the 1894 Grand Opera House, the Strand Street Theatre and the Mary Moody Northern outdoor theatre on the island’s west end. And the centrally located Moody Gardens complex features a convention center, walking track bordered by exotic flora, a rain forest recreated within a 10-story glass pyramid, and a 3-D IMAX theatre. The Gulf of Mexico and Galveston Bay provide the area with miles of beaches, making the island a perfect setting for boating, swimming, fishing and surfing enthusiasts. An Island of Opportunity. |
