Located on the scenic campus of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Hospital is revered as a premier provider of offender patient care. As the only correctional facility connected to a university, TDCJ’s maximum security hospital offers a unique opportunity for ambitious, focused nurses who want to advance their career in a state-of-the-art setting where they gain both traditional and nontraditional experience.
A Story of Historical Significance
Since the 1920’s, the TDCJ has worked in partnership with UTMB to provide optimal inpatient and outpatient ambulatory care for our offender population in a maximum-security environment. Established in July 1983, our hospital was the first and remains the only one of its kind, specializing in offender health care on the campus of a major academic medical center. We house 172 inpatient beds, a multi-service ambulatory care center, a minor operating room with a recovery room, a 12-bed telemetry unit, a 6-bed medical intensive care unit and a 56-bed overnight holding unit. In addition, we operate four Telemedicine sites that see over 9,000 patients a year.

Responsible for providing healthcare services for over 150,000 incarcerated offenders, UTMB Hospitals, the Group Practice and the Correctional Managed Care department offer a broad spectrum of specialty areas. On-site services within the hospital include:
