Innovation, discovery and collaboration have proved a powerful research combination. Seven UTMB medical departments are ranked in the Top 20 nationally for NIH funding; three of those are ranked among the top 10.

 
  • International leader in infectious diseases research — www.utmb.edu/ihii
    • Galveston National Laboratory for the safe study of infectious threats to health dedicated November 2008; first and only national lab in Texas; $174 million from NIH and $59 million in state matching funds
    • Lead agency for the five-state Western Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases Research
    • Only university in the U.S. to garner both the national laboratory and center of excellence grants
    • More than 200 researchers currently devoted to such research
    • Pediatrics Department/Sealy Center for Vaccine Development received the first Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation research grant to a Texas school ($9.5 million for flu vaccine development)
    • Hepatitis C Cooperative Research Center at UTMB manages consortium including Southwest Foundation for Research, Johns Hopkins University and University of Washington–Seattle
    • Global Health Program to utilize telemedicine capability to conduct global grand rounds for exchange of expertise
    • $1.75 million in federal funding to develop a Pilot BSL4 Facility at UTMB to help set national standards for training personnel to work in high- and maximum-containment environments
  • Three UT System STAR award recipients on faculty
  • UTMB is the only medical school to have received a clinical proteomics contract from the NIH
  • Faculty play a lead role in Mission Connect, a consortium led by The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) that includes UT Health Science Center at Houston, Texas A&M and Baylor College of Medicine; dedicated to reversing the effects of spinal cord and brain injury
  • Seven School of Medicine departments ranked in the Top 20 among their peers for NIH funding, including three ranked among the top 10; overall, UTMB ranks 41st in NIH funding to medical schools
